This style is a relatively new approach to the traditional art form of Bellydance inspiring dancers everywhere. Tribal Style has honored various gypsy cultures beyond Egypt in movement, rhythm, and dress. The key element of group improvisation has encouraged dancers to grow individually while adapting to this ancient ritual of community. Originally from the Rocky Mountains, Geneva was introduced to Middle Eastern Dance by her sister and began studies with Mesmera in California. She delved into Tribal Style in Arizona with local group Unity in Motion while following the teachings of Domba! and assistance of Lindsey MacQueen. With interests in a plethora of dance forms, this style has enabled her to study and intentionally fuse Flamenco, Salsa, Tango, Bhangra, and other Gypsy concepts with Bellydance techniques. The precision of isolations drives Geneva's style. Her knowledge and creative abilities have allowed her to perform with professional dance troupes, individuals, and musicians throughout the world. With extensive training in Cheerleading, Gymnastics, and Massage Therapy, Geneva carries a powerful understanding of anatomy and exercise training. Having an opportunity to study with internationally renowned artist Suhaila Salimpour, she has acquired a solid understanding of movement theory and discipline in Suhaila's Certified Format. Geneva also utilizes concepts from studied practices such as yoga and Capoeira. After lessons, students often insist for her return with full satisfaction of knowledge and challenge through movement and concepts. "Geneva caters to every individual to enable them to achieve their maximum potential, regardless of levels." She describes her improvisational style as a fusion of Hip Hop and Bellydance. Being heavily influenced by Hip Hop culture over the years, Dancer Heather Stants, Popper Tommy "Hypno" Chan, and Beat-boxer Pete List are held in high regard with Geneva. She is often inspired by performances or attending lessons of any caliber and gains new inspirations whenever possible. Appreciation is given to Tribal Style Founders; Carolena Nericcio for many adaptations on Jamila Salimpour's concepts, Paulette Rees-Denis' focus on sisterhood and community, and Jill Parker's innovations and creative expression. Though inspired by several Tribal Fusion Stylized instructors, Geneva's style is of her own. Geneva allures audiences with her presence, attracts dancers with her poise and complex fluidity, and encourages students with her strength and generosity in dance and life. |
